Baba's Path
“It was just a delight to walk around with Meher Baba.”
- Leatrice Johnston remembering August 2, 1956
When Avatar Meher Baba reached what is now known as Baba’s Tree, He entered under the tree’s canopy and sat alone on the dry bed of leaves, gesturing that no one else should sit.
His eyes shone, and He said He was happy. Then, He rose swiftly and led the group back up the dusty trail.
Everyone followed — panting to keep pace. One man was given the chance to hold Baba’s umbrella, but Meher Baba would change directions so swiftly, it was hard for him to keep up.
As Marguerite Poley, who was with Him that day in 1956, remembered, “So, Baba was walking up this hill, and I tell you, you could not keep up with Him. He just floated over the air. He was just going and going… And many people fell behind.
“And His men disciples even were running, and it’s just a walk with Him.”
Leatrice Johnston also remarked on how quickly Meher Baba walked. “You would almost have to run. Yet, He was so graceful, the way He would glide. It never looked like He was walking fast.”
It was as if Meher Baba were going in slow motion with His grace, she noted.
He walked “all over the grounds here so that all of Meher Mount is a very sacred place. It still carries Baba’s wonderful loving presence. It was just a delight to walk around with Baba,” Leatrice added.
Today, all who visit, are fortunate to be able to walk in the footsteps of the Avatar of the Age — to walk on Baba’s Path leading to and from Baba’s Tree. It is marked with a stone sign.
